âI hope Iâm having a boy.â Tilly rested a hand on her non-existent baby bump. It was Megâs second day in a row sitting in the waiting area for an ultrasound. Ed was on the other side of Tilly, and Meg had given them the news about her scan over the phone the night before. Sheâd considered waiting until after Tillyâs scan, to keep the focus entirely on her daughter, but sheâd almost certainly have let it slip by accident. At least this way, she couldnât accuse Meg of keeping it from her. Tilly had said all the right things, but her tone had been subdued and it had been hard for Meg not to take it personally.
âWhy do you want a boy?â Meg knew she was probably asking for trouble, but she couldnât seem to help herself.
âI just donât want everything weâre doing to be the same.â Tilly must have seen the look Ed shot her, because Meg did. âAnd Iâm also hoping that, maybe, if I have a boy, heâll have a bit of Seth and Dad in him. Youâre not going to get that, are you? Well definitely not a child thatâs anything like Dad anyway.â
Meg caught her breath, digging her nails into the palms of her hands in the hope that the physical pain might somehow alleviate the effect that Tillyâs words had on her. Just lately, spending time with her daughter was like death by a thousand cuts. What Tilly had said might have been true, but that didnât make it any easier to hear.
âI bet Johnnieâs thrilled.â Ed smiled, leaning forward to look past Tilly. âIâll be really pleased if weâre having a girl. Dads and daughters always seem to have such a great relationship, but I donât really care what weâre having. And we wonât be able to find out today anyway.â
âDonât be so sure.â Tilly shook her head. âWhen my friend Sophie went for her twelve-week scan, the sonographer told her what they thought the gender was. They said they could only be 60 or 70 per cent sure it was a girl at that stage, but they were right. If itâs a boy, itâll be definite, though, because if there are dangly bits thereâs no mistaking it.â
âYouâre going to love that baby like youâve never loved anything else in your life, whatever gender it turns out to be. Itâs unconditional.â Meg squeezed her daughterâs hand. Sometimes over the last couple of months the love she had for Tilly had needed to be unconditional, but Meg had never once doubted it.
âTilly Sawyer?â The sonographer who came out to call her name introduced himself as Tim. He got Tilly settled, explained what heâd be doing and made the same apology about the coldness of the gel. But that was where the similarity between Megâs scan and Tillyâs ended.
Meg knew something was wrong almost straight away and the silence in the room was torturous as Tim moved the scanner across Tillyâs abdomen. The sonographer
